The installation of playground equipment can be as easy as attaching brackets together or as complex as using Bobcat equipped with a rock-cutting auger. The complexity of a playground installation is directly proportionate to the size and type of equipment. Modular playgrounds comprised of steel posts, decks and plastic components tend to be the more involved installations. Independent play events such as climbers and spring riders tend to be less complex.
A common denominator in most playground installations is the use of concrete to secure the unit to the ground. Holes are dug to a depth that will vary by your region of the country. For instance, a footing hole dug in Minnesota will need to be deeper than a hole dug in Texas, this variation is caused by the depth of the frost line found in the respective states. Typically, holes are dug to a depth of two feet. Naturally, this can pose a challenge in states such as Arizona where one is likely to encounter rocky conditions or Florida where one is likely to encounter coral and water.
In addition to the product installation, the area referred to as the "fall zone" must be defined. The fall zone is typically a 6-foot perimeter around play equipment that must be free from other items. This zone is necessary in the event that a child were to fall off a piece of equipment. The extra space would prevent them from hitting something near by. Within this fall zone area, you must maintain safety surfacing at a depth recommended by the CPSC. The tallest accessible point of the play equipment, which is also referred to as the maximum fall height, dictates the depth of the surfacing material. Again, the CPSC guide will help you determine the necessary depth of surfacing material.
VisionMasters offers installation instructions with explosion drawings that show at a glance, how equipment is assembled. Additionally, we provide footing diagrams (link to footing diagram) so that you can dig holes in advance thus maximizing the use of an auger, if you're renting.
For more complex installations, it is recommended that you consider hiring a playground installer. In recent years, playground installers have created an association in an effort to begin a formal certification process. The National Playground Contractors Association lists the contact information of playground installers around the country. This is an excellent source for finding a qualified, local installer.
In similar fashion, several states have mandated that playgrounds require installation by state licensed contractors who are bonded and carry insurance. It is highly recommended that you check with the local codes in your state before beginning the installation process.
