Wood is the most used furniture building material in existence. Wooden Furniture has been around for thousands of years and dates back to the caveman. Wood furniture comes in 3 categories composites, softwoods and hard woods. Outdoor furniture like chairs, tables, swings and beds can be made out of just about any wood, composite, recycled material or even plastic. Furniture made out of wood is naturally beautiful, incredibly durable and versatile, which is why it is used to create everything from patio decks, backyard play sets and furniture to roofing shingles.
The word “hardwood” is deceptive. Hardwoods are not always harder or denser material. For example balsa wood is a light weight wood and less dense but is still classified as a hardwood. Hardwoods are the highest quality and most expensive and are known for their beautiful natural colors. The 7 woods most commonly used in furniture production are cedar, oak, cherry, walnut, teak, maple, pine and mahogany.
1. Can easily be stained or painted.
2. Less likely to bend or warp.
3. Durable and long lasting.
4. Can be used indoors or outdoors.
5. Insect and rot resistant.
Hardwood Verses Softwood Benefits:
1. Softwoods are less expensive than hardwoods,
2. Softwoods require extra care because they are less durable
3. Softwoods is much easier to scratch or dent softwood furniture.
4. Most of the time do not have the beautiful grains compared to hardwood
5. Softwoods therefore don't stain as beautifully.
One commonly used wood for building furniture is pine which is often used in construction with the finest pieces are set aside for furniture. In construction, knots and splits are common. Lots of construction lumber will not accept paint and this kind of wood is used for shelves or packing crates.
Cedar is not a very dense wood, making it one of the lightest softwoods available. Cedar also boasts an incredible thermal co-efficient. That means that the little tiny "air pockets" between the cells of the wood end up acting as an insulator when the wood is dry. If it is hot outside, for example, cedar will remain at a lower temperature than most other materials that conduct heat with more efficiency (e.g. other hardwoods, metals and some plastics). The result is a cooler chair to sit on. And don't forget, because it is a lightweight wood it will be easier for you to move it around (and store it away) than a heavy hardwood chair.
Composites are the cheapest form of wood and are literally manufactured, rather than grown. The best know for of composite wood is plywood which consists of multiple layers of thin wooden sheets are glued together and pressed. Plywood is strong and resists swelling, shrinking and warping. There is some furniture made directly from plywood, but generally it is only used as a support when incorporated into furniture.
